Utah Auto Insurance

A popular tourist area, whether it be for the Sundance Film festival, the ski resorts and Spas, the beautify of the Rockies, the rivers and streams, raveling through the desert or touring busy downtown Salt Lake City, residents must have proper Utah Auto insurance.

Utah Auto Insurance Requirements

Utah is a no fault state for car accidents, this means that each driver will cover his or her own medical expenses sustained in an accident and that no driver is deemed to be at fault and responsible for the other drivers expenses. Utah became a No Fault State in an effort to lower the amount of car accident lawsuits piling up in the courts and to lower the Utah auto insurance premiums paid out by its motorists.

In line with any No Fault State, Personal Injury Liability coverage, is required by law. Personal Injury Liability covers the medical expenses that the insured has sustained in an accident. These costs can be astronomical and if an insured already has good health insurance coverage the Personal Injury Liability coverage can be set at a lower amount.

No Fault Utah auto insurance coverage will pay up to a certain amount for medical damages after which the party deemed to be at fault may be expected to cover the difference. For that reason, Utah requires that its motorists take out Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability Insurance. The state minimums are set at $25/50/15.

  • Bodily Injury Liability – The minimum State requirements will have the Utah auto insurance companies pay out $25,000 for medical expenses for one person in the other car, due to an accident their insured had caused.
  • A total of $50,000 will be paid out for more than one person injured in the other car.
  • Property Damage Liability – The insured’s Utah auto insurance company will pay out up to $15,000 for any damages they have caused to the other driver’s vehicle or for public and private property repairs.

The State does recommend that their motorists take out higher limits in order to cover the ever- escalating costs for medical and property damages.

Utah also recommends that their motorists take out Comprehensive and Collision coverage to pay for any damages they may have incurred to their own vehicle should they be deemed at fault. Comprehensive and Collision will also cover against the possibility that that the other driver was at fault yet couldn’t pay for damages sustained to the insured’s car.

Because not every State requires that its driver’s carry liability insurance, Utah recommends that its motorists carry Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage to protect them in the event that the at fault driver has little or no insurance and could not pay the medical and car damages.  It will also cover for damages sustained in a hit and run accident.
