South Dakota Auto Insurance Requirements
To protect drivers in South Dakota from out of pocket payouts, the State has a minimum requirement for liability insurance coverage. The minimum requirement for Bodily Injury and Property damage Protection is set at: 25/50/25.
- Bodily Injury Liability – Bodily Injury Liability insurance will pay out up to $25,000 for one person in the other vehicle, who was injured and requiring medical treatment.
- A total of $50,000 will be paid out for more than one injured victim in the other vehicle.
- Property Damage Protection – A maximum of $25,000 will be paid out by the South Dakota auto insurance company, for damages caused to the other driver’s car, included in this amount are funds for damage to public and private property. This minimum coverage must be maintained on every vehicle owned by the insured.
To avoid out of pocket expenses for damages that exceed the minimum requirement set forth by the state, the motorists are advised to purchase greater than minimum amounts for South Dakota auto insurance liability policies.
Since certain States do not require their motorists to carry liability insurance and for that reason, South Dakota requires that its motorist carry Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage. With UM protection, motorists will be covered for damages caused to their vehicle by a driver who is not insured or underinsured. UM coverage will also pick up the cost of damages sustained to the car by a hit and run driver.
