South Carolina Auto Insurance
South Carolina with its warm temperatures and its lovely beaches is a popular state for tourism. Because of this, there is much traffic on South Carolina roads and highways. South Carolina auto insurance coverage is crucial for its residents. Drivers were fortunate enough to pay on average only $1622 for South Carolina auto insurance and that figure was below the national average which was $1766 in 2009, making South Carolina one of the lowest States for auto insurance rates in the Nation.
South Carolina Auto Insurance Requirements
South Carolina does not mandate that its motorist carry Bodily Injury and Property Damage Protection, though it is strongly recommended that they carry at least the basic amounts, which are set at 25/50/25. These amounts will provide coverage in the event that they are found guilty for causing an accident and injuring, or cause damage to the other party’s vehicle. The breakdown is as follows:
- Bodily Injury Liability – The basic amount for Bodily Injury Liability would be a maximum of $25,000 to cover injuries to one person in the other car if the insured is found to be at fault.
- A total of $50,000 would be allocated for the injuries sustained to more than one passenger in the other vehicle.
- Property Damage Liability maximum amount paid out for the minimal requirements would be for $25,000 to be for repairs and damages to the other person’s vehicle and for other property damage as well.
These minimal amounts may not be enough to cover major accidents and therefore it is recommended that the motorists’ South Carolina auto insurance coverage be well above these basic limits.
South Carolina also recommends that its motorists carry Comprehensive and Collision coverage in case the other driver who was at fault cannot cover the damages to the car, or the insured was actually the person at fault. Comprehensive and Collision coverage will also protect the insured against the forces of nature or wildlife, which may damage their vehicle.
South Carolina auto insurance coverage must include Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Protection. With UM insurance, the insured is covered against a hit and run accident where no driver was to be found at the scene of the accident. UM insurance will also cover the damages the other driver on the scene had caused but did not have any or sufficient insurance to the cover it.
