Alaska Auto Insurance

The breathtaking terrain of Alaska makes it one of the most fabulous states to drive in, whether you are a Sunday driver using your car to travel back and forth to work or driving your children to and from school, you can appreciate feeling you are insured sufficiently to cover most accidents should they happen. Alaskans require decent auto insurance to travel the mountains and rugged terrains.  Remember, the winter snow and slush makes driving a little more difficult than southern states with little or no snow. Having Alaska auto insurance is a must for all native drivers.

Alaska auto insurance is comprised of basic coverage but is slightly higher than other states, however Alaskans do get more car insurance coverage for their dollar. Minimum insurance protects against most accidents but will not be able to handle large auto insurance claims. The state of Alaska highly recommends that drivers carry over and above the basic auto insurance protection to handle other situations should they occur.

Alaska Auto Insurance Requirements

  • Bodily Injury Liability – With Alaska auto insurance, Alaskans will be covered for $50,000 per injured person.
  • A maximum of $100,000 will be covered in the event there is more than one injured party.  The state of Alaska requires that the party who is at fault and their auto insurance company pay for the medical expenses of the injured party or parties in the other vehicle.
  • Alaskan auto insurance will cover an additional $25,000 for Property Damage Liability in the event that the driver at fault damages the other driver’s vehicle or the private property of the other party.

Since the State of Alaska is not a no fault state there is no obligation to carry full coverage for all possible accident situations. However, it is strongly recommended that Alaskans insure themselves against the possibility of a hit and run. Alaskans should protect themselves against larger claims, that way they need not worry about major out of pocket expenses. Alaska auto insurance patrons should carry uninsured/underinsured coverage in the event the at fault party does not carry insurance or has insufficient insurance which is a real possibility with out of state drivers.

This insurance is also recommended in Alaska because of the wildlife. When the wildlife such as a moose ventures onto the highway it can damage cars or injure drivers, which can result in a major accidents.  Since animals are not human, Alaska deems the car accident as “no fault,” yet Alaskan drivers will still have to bear the brunt of any expenses incurred. Therefore, carrying uninsured/underinsured auto insurance coverage would be very prudent to cover the damages sustained due to the accident.
