American Family Insurance was founded in 1927 by a Herman Wittwer, an insurance salesman from Wisconsin. What eventually became Farmers Mutual Automobile Insurance Company was changed to American Family Mutual Insurance Company in 1963, to reflect their growing customer business and expansions. A total of 4,000 independent insurance representatives are available through American Family, spanning into the service areas of 19 States. The company’s corporate headquarters is now located in Madison, Wisconsin. They also have independent insurance representatives in regional offices located in, Madison, St. Joseph in Missouri, and Eden Prairie in Minnesota, Columbus in Ohio and in Denver, Colorado. Their Corporate Giving Program is implemented in 19 states and is affiliated with such services as, The Red Cross, Second Harvest Food Bank, United Way, Neighborhood Housing Services and Transitional Housing. American Family provides $2 million yearly with contributions going to charitable and community organizations. They also promote youth and health education programs and support local community art group productions. The company is involved in several environmental programs that strive to reduce their fossil-fuel-based energy use. To improve upon these programs they regularly audit their company owned buildings and target energy-reduction opportunities.
Recently, the company incorporated a new way of serving and expanding their customer base operations, by offering cell phone applications for their customer self-service plans. American Family Insurance also includes emergency road service coverage, auto rental reimbursement, accidental death and dismemberment coverage, liability, comprehensive, medical expenses and personal injury protection coverage. Their auto lease and loan protection coverage is to protect against the depreciation of an auto’s value from the lot, to the financial payments left on an auto, in the event of total loss. There is also an optional protection that covers autos that are leased or financed.
