ABS Discount

Cars with a factory installed anti lock braking system (A.B.S.) could earn you a discount of 5 percent on the collision portion of your insurance premium. Both two and four wheel Anti Lock Brake Systems are eligible.

The Anti Lock Brake System affords you a discount because of its ability to improve vehicle stability, steer-ability and stopping capability. Insurance companies assess your car insurance rates based on “risk” – the likelihood that you will file a claim – so anti-lock brakes are not only a valuable safety feature, they can actually save you money on your monthly insurance premiums as well.

If you are not sure whether or not your car has an anti-lock brake system installed, check your owners manual or ask your dealer. Many economy class cars do not come with this feature, but it may be available as an option; so be sure to check with your dealer.

If you already own a car equipped with a factory installed anti-lock brake system, make sure you are getting the discount.

Here’s how: Go get your insurance policy (that’s probably the one crumpled in the back of your filing cabinet!). Next find your declarations page; the page that explains your car insurance coverages and make sure an Anti-Lock Brake System Discount is one of your listed discounts.

If it isn’t, call your car insurance agent right away and tell him/her that you qualify for an anti-lock brake system discount. If your insurance company does not offer this discount, it is probably time to look for a new agency. You will probably be surprised by the amount of money you can save!

Beware of add-on braking systems claiming to be an Anti-Lock Brake System. The Federal Trade Commission has ordered all add-on brake manufacturers to discontinue advertisements that claim their add-on braking system performed as effectively as factory installed anti-lock braking systems. These add-on braking systems are not eligible for the Anti-Lock Brake System Discount.
